Amino acids make up the thousands of different proteins in the human body. Nine out of 24 are considered essential amino acids, which means that they cannot be produced by the body and must be obtained through our diet. 22 of the 24 different amino acids are contained in the DeLixir Top Form smart cell nutrition supplement.
Of those nine essential amino acids, three are the branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs): leucine, isoleucine and valine. One of the most popular uses of BCAAs is to increase muscle growth.
The BCAA leucine activates a certain pathway in the body that stimulates muscle protein synthesis, which is the process of making muscle. In humans, BCAAs account for 35% of the essential amino acids found in muscle proteins. They account for 40% of the total amino acids required by our body.
During prolonged exercising a catabolism of BCAA occurs, because they are one of the main sources of energy for muscle cells. Studies have shown that supplemental BCAA intake before and after exercise led to reduced fatigue and improved athletic performance. BCAA’s play an important role in the building of muscle tissue, so their pre- and post-exercise results showed reduced muscle fiber destruction and increased muscle protein synthesis.
Taking BCAA supplements can prevent the breakdown of protein in certain populations with muscle wasting. BCAA supplements may improve the health outcomes of people with liver disease, while also possibly protecting against liver cancer. BCAAs may improve health in people with cirrhosis, a chronic disease in which the liver does not function properly.
