All types of Shigella can be the causative agents of an infectious disease - bacterial dysentery (also called shigellosis). Symptoms of shigellosis, formerly called bacterial dysentery, are characterized by diarrhea accompanied by fever, nausea, and sometimes toxemia, vomiting, abdominal wall contractions, and bowel tenderness.
